Storm spotters wanted in Southeast Michigan — Sign up for FREE online training

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Are you an aspiring storm chaser?

If you've got the weather bug, this news is for you.

The National Weather Service has announced that Skywarn spotter training classes have been scheduled for Southeast Michigan in the spring of 2022.

These classes are being held virtually, via GoTo webinar, beginning in early March.

Spotter training classes cover severe weather hazards including thunderstorms and tornadoes. Participants will learn about the structure and movement of severe thunderstorms, identification of important storm features, and safety concerns.

All classes last about 75 to 90 minutes. They are FREE and open to the public.

While you must be age be age 13 or older to report on storms, the classes are appropriate for all ages, and kids are welcome to sit in.

NWS said ages 10 and up will likely get the most out of the training.

Each class will be limited to 150 slots, so participants encouraged to have multiple family members from the same household sit in on the training using one connection.

Classes are scheduled in collaboration with local emergency management officials.
