Stormy weather leaves over 60,000 without power in metro Detroit

(WWJ) -- Thousands are without power in southeastern Michigan as a result of stormy weather.

DTE Energy crews are working to restore power to more than 60,000 homes and businesses, after gusty storms moved across metro Detroit on Sunday night and Monday morning.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, the largest outage still lingering was near South Lyon, where more than 3,000 customers were still without power. There were 2,000 customers without power in Bloomfield Hills.

Ryan Stow with DTE tells WWJ, in total more than 130,000 customers lost power at some point.

More than 7,000 outages were reported earlier in the day in Rochester, while 2,300 people lost power in Livonia, 2,100 were out in Garden City, and another 1,700 are offline in Royal Oak.

Stow says that wind damage is the main culprit for the wide-spread outages. Those same high winds, which reach upwards of 40 mph earlier Monday, also made it more difficult for crews to restore power.

There are no estimates yet on a restoration timeline.
