WILCOX TWP. (WWJ) – A suspect is dead after slamming their car into a tree while trying to flee police on Monday afternoon in West Michigan.

Michigan State Police are investigating the crash, which happened near Wilcox Township – about 50 miles north of Grand Rapids.

Deputies from the Newaygo County Sheriff's Office were called to a home in Wilcox Township Monday afternoon after receiving a report of shots fired. The suspect’s vehicle was described as a red Dodge Charger.

The sheriff’s office says Undersheriff Chad Palmiter saw a car matching the description of the suspect traveling east on Baseline Road. After confirming it was the suspect, the undersheriff flipped on his lights and sirens to stop the Charger, but the suspect sped away.

The suspect continued eastbound on East Baseline Road and eventually crossed the centerline near S. Oak Avenue and went off the roadway and slammed into a tree.

The suspect was declared dead at the scene. The officer was not involved in the crash, an MSP spokesperson said.

Officials have not released the suspect’s name, pending family notification.

Authorities have not said whether anyone was injured in the reported shooting that prompted the initial call, or what led to the alleged shooting.

The MSP Hart Post and Sixth District Accident Reconstructionist were called to the scene to investigate.
