Arrests made in double murder of nine-month-old baby's parents at Detroit gas station

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Two people have been arrested in connection with what Detroit police say was a targeted shooting at a gas station on the city’s west side Monday night that left the parents of a nine-month-old girl dead.

No information about either suspect has been disclosed, but in a tweet Wednesday afternoon, police said two people were in custody and one firearm was recovered.

Police also thanked Detroiters for the tips they received after pleading for the public’s help on Tuesday.

The two 22-year-old parents were shot to death inside their car at a Marathon station on W. Warren near the Southfield Freeway around 8:40 p.m. Monday. Authorities said the woman was holding the baby in her arms, but she was uninjured in the shooting.

The victims’ names have not yet been released.

A motive for the shooting is still unknown.

Police are still investigating and say “there’s still a lot of work to do in the case.” Anyone who has any information about the shooting is asked to call 313-596-2260.

Authorities said on Tuesday the parents were inside their vehicle when the suspects approached from the north, walked directly up to the car and fired shots inside.

Both parents were hit by the gunfire, but Detroit Police Cmdr. Michael McGinnis says “miraculously,” the nine-month-old, who was being held in her mother’s arms, was not hit.

Police Chief James White called it a targeted shooting.

“We know that this was a targeted hit,” White said at a press conference outside the gas station Tuesday afternoon. “This was not a random act of violence -- this was a targeted act of violence -- and we’ll be working that angle. And with that, comes a lot of investigative work that has to happen. But they were not strangers to these folks.”
