DETROIT (WWJ) – Two teens are in custody for what Detroit Police Chief James White describes as a “completely unprovoked” attack on a uniformed officer at a gas station over the weekend.

The attack happened around 5:30 p.m. Saturday at a BP gas station near Joy and Southfield as the officer was inside making a purchase ahead of working a detail downtown for the Taylor Swift concert.

The suspects came from behind the officer and tried to take his weapon. He was able to wrestle the gun away from one of the men.

The officer, who White called a hero, “made the decision to fight for his weapon, get his weapon back,” according to the chief.

“And he also made the great decision not to fire at the suspects, even though one of the suspects had a weapon in his hand and was preparing, or at least thinking about shooting our officer before he fled,” White told reporters at a press conference Monday.

After conducting surveillance and receiving tips from the community over the last few days, both suspects were arrested Monday afternoon in Southfield, with the help of their attorney.

White said limited information on the suspects could be released because they are both juveniles.

The suspects ran, hid and changed their appearance over the last 48 hours, White said.

It was not immediately clear what charges they may be facing.
