DEARBORN (WWJ) -- One woman has died and another is in the hospital after a head-on crash that police said involved a wrong-way driver, early on Memorial Day.

According to Michigan State Police, at around 4:30 a.m. Monday, a 31-year old Taylor woman was driving a black SUV southbound in the northbound lanes of the Southfield Freeway (M-39) when she crashed into a Cadillac SUV near Ford Road.

The Taylor woman died, police said, and two people in the Cadillac were taken from the scene to a local hospital for treatment.

Later, MSP said the driver of the Cadillac was released from the hospital. The passenger, identified as a 31-year-old Redford woman, was in critical condition and undergoing surgery.

MSP said investigators do not yet know why the Taylor woman was driving the wrong way.

“Currently we are not sure how the at fault driver got on the freeway in the wrong direction or if they were impaired," said MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw. “Once the autopsy is completed we will know if the driver was impaired. We may never know how she ended up on the wrong side."

Police did not release the name of the woman who died, but said her family has been notified.

The Southfield Freeway was closed for about five hours following the crash, but has since reopened.
