KALAMAZOO (WWJ) – A former Western Michigan University student has been charged in connection with an alleged drunk driving crash that claimed the life of a Metro Detroit teen.

Hunter Hudgins, 19, is suspected of being drunk when he hit 19-year-old Bailey Broderick on Fraternity Village Drive back on Nov. 3. Broderick, from Wixom, was a WMU student at the time of the crash.

Hudgins, no longer a student at the school, lives in Tecumseh. A warrant for his arrest was issued on April 20 and he voluntarily turned himself in on Monday.

Hudgins was arraigned Monday, facing one felony count of operating under the influence or while impaired by liquor causing death. If convicted of that crime, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

He was also charged with one misdemeanor count of a moving violation causing death and a person under 21 with a blood alcohol content of .02 to .07%.

The teen’s driving license has been suspended.

He was granted a $10,000 personal recognizance bond and is scheduled for a preliminary exam on May 12.
