ROMULUS (WWJ) – A targeted shooting on I-94 in Wayne County left a 17-year-old driver injured and police trying to piece together just what happened.
Michigan State Police got calls of a shooting or crash on westbound I-94 near Wayne Road around 8:45 p.m. Monday. Authorities said Monday night there were no known injuries.
But Tuesday morning, MSP troopers closed the freeway near Wayne to search for evidence form the incident.
Authorities said as the search began it had been determined it was “not a crash or a random investigation.”
Tuesday afternoon officials said a 17-year-old boy was driving a Kia, which was later determined to have been stolen. He and a juvenile female passenger had just left the city of Inkster and entered the freeway at Middlebelt.
As they were driving, a dark colored vehicle sped up alongside the car and fired multiple shots, hitting the Kia and the teen driver, who then lost control and went off the road.
MSP shared a photo of the scene, showing the car covered in grass and leaves.

The passenger was not hit by the gunfire, officials said. Another car passing at the time of the incident was also hit by a round, though the driver wasn’t hit and wasn’t part of the targeted shooting, according to MSP.
The teen driver of the Kia took himself to the hospital in serious condition. Both teens have been turned over to their parents.
Authorities have not said whether either teen in the reportedly stolen Kia may face charges.
Detectives are still investigating the incident and are asking anyone who has information on the case to call 855-MICH-TIP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
