(WWJ) Police say a western Michigan teenager has lost both of his thumbs after his homemade bomb exploded at school.
The 16-year-old boy was suspended from Newaygo High School, north of Grand Rapids, and will likely face expulsion proceedings, according to authorities.
Police said the teen brought a homemade explosive to school, injuring himself, four other students and a teacher when it detonated in class.
Michigan State Police, with the help of the FBI and ATF, then searched the boy's home, in the 2300 block of E. 95th in Newaygo, to find more improvised explosive devices.
All were denotated safely by the MSP Bomb Squad.
The boy's father, 34-year-old Robert Daniel Saylor, was charged by the Newaygo County Prosecutor and arraigned Tuesday on one count of Explosives - Manufacture/Possession of Molotov Cocktail, and one count of contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. He is also charged as a Habitual Offender - Second Offense.
The high school was placed on lockdown and teen was arrested by Newaygo Police following the incident Monday morning. He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained in the blast, and has since been released into the care of family members.
MSP said Newaygo County Child Protective Services was notified of the situation.
The Newaygo County Schools superintendent has said it is not believed that student intended to hurt anyone.
