DETROIT (WWJ) – Metro Detroiters woke up to a mild Sunday morning, but temperatures started to plummet throughout the day and into the new week, with the possibility of Sunday night snow showers looming.

Temperatures were above 30 degrees in most areas across metro Detroit Sunday morning, but the National Weather Service in Detroit says they’re expected to fall into the 20s later in the day.

By 6 p.m., it was already 25 in Detroit, 23 in Royal Oak, 19 in Ann Arbor and 19 further north of the city, it was 19 in Flint.

An arctic airmass – the coldest so far this season – is then expected to pass through the area, leading to even colder temps as the new week starts.

The NWS says that will lead to even colder temperatures Monday and Tuesday with “widespread negative temps Monday night.”

Highs will be about 10 degrees below normal, with lows likely below zero for most locations Monday night.

Accuweather meteorologist John Feerick says while temperatures will dip to the mid 20s or lower by Sunday night, blustery winds mean RealFeel temps will be near zero most of the time.

Feerick says those RealFeel temperatures will remain around zero on Monday and Tuesday, before things warm back up on Wednesday and Thursday, when temperatures are expect to be in the mid- to upper-30s.

The NWS says Tuesday’s low temperatures could dip to just 2 degrees.

As for Sunday night, the NWS says lake effect snow from near Lake Michigan on the west side of the state could travel to the area for “light snow showers.” The NWS did not mention any possible accumulation totals.

This comes on the heels of a Winter Weather Advisory on Saturday that saw freezing rain bring slick road conditions to metro Detroit.
