DETROIT (WWJ) – Police departments across the country are turning more and more to the use of technology to help keep their communities safe.
Here in Detroit, police and city officials are hailing the new ShotSpotter technology, which uses acoustic software to detect gunshots, pinpoint the location and alert police. The technology is currently used in two of the city’s most violent areas – the 8th and 9th precincts, on the northwest and northeast sides, respectively.
Mayor Mike Duggan touted the technology last week during the Mackinac Policy Conference, but on Monday, Detroit City Council postponed a vote on whether to expand ShotSpotter use to other areas of the city.
So as technology continues to play a more prominent role in fighting crime, some objectors say not only can it be untrustworthy, but it crosses boundaries. In a new edition of The Daily J podcast, WWJ’s Zach Clark gets to the heart of ShotSpotter technology in Detroit.
