DETROIT (WWJ) – Preparations have been underway for months, and now with “spooky season” just around the corner, it’s almost time for the “world’s most spectacular masquerade party.”

Theatre Bizarre at the Masonic Temple in Detroit draws thousands of visitors each year, with eight floors of a massive, immersive art installation.

WWJ’s Erin Vee spoke with John Dunivant, the mastermind behind the exhibition. He shared the backstory and the inspiration for the event, which features performers, an open bar, strolling dinner, dancing, music and so much more.

“It’s literally a choose your own adventure,” Dunivant said, noting the wide array of curated attractions almost requires more than one night to see everything.

Erin, who has attended Theatre Bizarre in the past, says “there are no words to describe it. You have to see it for yourself.”

While the Masonic Temple is decked out in thousands of special light bulbs, decorations and coordination, party-goers are also part of the theme as well.

“You’re encouraged to lose yourself in the anonymity of your costume and become a part of this world,” Dunivant said.

This year’s Theatre Bizarre is set for Oct. 14-15 and Oct. 21-22. More information on the event can be found at https://theatrebizarre.com.
