(WWJ) -- Many metro Detroiters are gearing up to celebrate this Fourth of July weekend, but for many pets, it can be a terrifying time because of fireworks.

Audrey Blaylock, speaking live on WWJ Thursday afternoon, offered some tips to help pet owners keep their furry friends comfortable during what can be a stressful time.

“The first thing I always recommend is to make sure your pet has a safe place to go during the fireworks,” Blaylock said. “If they’re scared, we need to provide them with a space with their favorite blanket, a nice chew toy, somewhere nice where they can go decompress and get through it.”

Blaylock also recommends having a space with a fan or TV, or some sort of noise cancellation to drown out the noise of fireworks.

“A safe space is definitely going to go a long way during fireworks,” she said.

Some dogs may enjoy a “thunder vest” or “thundershirt,” which is similar to a weighted blanket for people, making them feel comforted as if they’re being hugged.

She also says some pets may benefit from anxiety medications or CBD oil.

“Different anti-anxiety meds are definitely a good option if your dog does have extreme discomfort, they’re extremely distressed, that’s definitely a conversation worth having with your veterinarian.,” Blaylock said.

The Michigan Animal Rescue League will be offering their dogs pools and sprinklers this weekend to help beat the heat, while still getting to have some outdoor fun. Blaylock also offered some tips on keeping pets cool in the heat.

“Definitely just want to keep an eye out for physical signs -- a lot of panting, drooling, specifically for dogs, and just acting disoriented, kind of swaying when walking,” Blaylock said. “If you’re noticing any of that, it’s definitely time to cut back on the activity or come indoors.”
