TRENTON (WWJ) – Authorities are investigating in Trenton after a fourth grader brought a bullet to school on Tuesday.

Trenton police officials say they were made aware of the incident on Tuesday after the student was found to have a single bullet in their possession at Anderson Elementary School.

A school resource officer and two supervisors responded and handled the investigation, police officials said on Facebook.

The student never made or implied a threat in any way – verbally, written or on social media – according to police.

Police did not specify what type of bullet the student had.

Officials say the student didn’t have a weapon and doesn’t have access to any weapons at home. It was not clear how the student got the bullet or why it was brought to school.

Superintendent Douglas Mentzer said in a letter posted to Facebook Wednesday afternoon the district in the past has had a policy of not disclosing details regarding students' behavior.

That's why the district didn't share information about the incident on Tuesday, but Mentzer says "this practice will change as situations warrant."

"To be clear, no weapon of any kind was found. However, we understand the alarm that this information instills in our parents' hearts," the letter said. "On behalf of Trenton Public Schools, we regret not being more forthcoming yesterday. Our goal was not to conceal information, but rather maintain student privacy while still informing our community of a disruption to our school day."

“The Trenton Police department is dedicated to being transparent and working with the school district to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” police officials said on Facebook.

The department is continuing to monitor and investigate the situation, and no further details can be released at this time.
