TROY (WWJ) – Five people are in custody after Troy police caught them trying to steal from a pharmaceutical business by cutting a hole in the garage door.

Troy police officials say all five suspects are from out of state.

The department recently got word from a neighboring agency that a group was going to try to break into the business, so last Friday Troy detectives began surveillance on the building, in the 1200 block of Rankin Street.

Just after midnight on Feb. 19, investigators saw two suspicious vehicles casing the building and two suspects were able to get inside by cutting a hole through an overhead garage door.

After they were inside, an employee from the business contacted Troy police to tell them they could see them on interior cameras trying to enter a secure area for scheduled drugs.

As detectives and uniformed officers surrounded the building, officers found two suspects inside – 20-year-old Isaiah Duncan and Ario Stephens.

Officers then found two lookout vehicles in the area, occupied by several people communicating with Duncan and Stephens. Shaun Lewis, 24, Jaevion Hackett, 20, and Alvin Whidby, 42, were all taken into custody.

While Troy officials said none of the suspects are Michiganders, they did not say where they are from.

All five have been charged with breaking and entering a building with intent and arraigned in 52-4 District Court. Stephens is being held on a $1 million bond, Whidby on $750,000, Hackett and Duncan on $250,000 and Shaun Kardover on $50,000.

Troy police were assisted by several neighboring agencies in the investigation, including the use of the Michigan State Police Aviation Unit’s Trooper 2 helicopter, which monitored the scene from above as it unfolded.
