Federal judge considers penalties against Trump lawyers questioning Michigan election results

DETROIT (AP) - A federal judge in Detroit is weighing whether to order financial penalties and other sanctions against some of former President Donald Trump's lawyers.

WWJ’s legal analyst Charlie Langton reports that Judge Linda Parker spent hours questioning attorneys over details of an unsuccessful lawsuit that challenged Michigan's 2020 election results.

During the hearing on Monday, Parker reportedly asked what lawyers did to ensure the legitimacy of claims of election fraud by Trump voters.

In many instances, no one volunteered an answer to that question. During other moments, the lawyers noted that affidavits from people present in Detroit counting centers were used to reinforce information given by their election experts.

“If you have not asked the minimal questions, I find that problematic,” Parker said. “I’m trying to determine the level of inquiry.”

The lawsuit alleging fraud was dropped after Parker found no evidence that votes for Trump somehow were destroyed or given to Joe Biden.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson — both democrats — along the city of Detroit, now want the lawyers to face the consequences of pursuing what they call frivolous claims. They are seeking at least $11,000 in legal fees for the state.

The attorneys include Trump lawyer-allies Sidney Powell of Dallas and L. Lin Wood of Atlanta. The judge has not yet reached a decision.
