TAYLOR (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police officials say they may never know what happened in the moments leading up to a Downriver crash that left two people dead on Tuesday.
At approximately 7:55 a.m. on Tuesday, MSP were on the scene of a crash on westbound I-94 near Beech Daly in Taylor.
Investigation reveals the driver of a semi-truck was in the center lane while the driver of a pickup was in the left lane.
The driver of a sedan came from an unknown location and struck the pickup which sent the pickup into the semi, say officials.
The sedan and pickup came to rest on the left shoulder and caught fire.
Police say the semi came to rest on the left shoulder, blocking the left and center lanes.
When troopers arrived on the scene, the driver of the pickup was already out and on the ground with severe burns. The driver of the sedan was removed from the vehicle and was also suffering from severe burns.
Both individuals were transported to the hospital and were pronounced dead, say officials.
The semi driver was not hurt.
MSP officials say they have determined the sedan driver crossed the median from the eastbound lanes and struck the pick up head on, but it was not clear what caused the driver to cross the centerline.
"It may never be determined why she crossed the median," MSP said in a tweet.
Troopers are continuing their investigation off-scene and next of kin have not been notified as both drivers have not been identified.
