LAPEER COUNTY (WWJ) – A Michigan man has been found guilty of a drunk driving crash that killed a couple riding a motorcycle in the summer of 2019.

After a three-day trial last week, a jury on Friday found 47-year-old Brian Burns guilty of two counts of operating while intoxicated causing death and two counts of reckless driving causing death.

The charges stemmed from a crash on Aug. 25, 2019 in Lapeer County that killed 53-year-old Brian Stamp and his 51-year-old girlfriend Rhonda McHaffey, both of Marlette.

Officials say Burns was driving his 2005 GMC Envoy on Lapeer Road (M-24) north of Mayfield Road in Lapeer after he had been drinking.

Witnesses told authorities they had seen the SUV driving erratically prior to the crash. Officials say Burns crossed the centerline and slammed head-on into a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Stamp and McHaffey were both thrown from the bike. They were both wearing helmets at the time, but were pronounced dead at the scene.

Burns, the lone occupant of the Envoy, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Burns’ bond was revoked and he was remanded to the Lapeer County Jail until sentencing, which is scheduled for August.
