WALLED LAKE (WWJ) – A 53-year-old man has been fatally shot by police after he shot and killed his wife and their family dog, and injured his daughter early Sunday morning at their home in Walled Lake.
Police received a 911 call shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday from a young woman who said she and her mother had been shot by her father.
Authorities were not able to get an address from the victim during the call, but were able to triangulate her area and arrived at a neighbor's house. While police were having a conversation with the neighbors, they heard more gunfire.
Officials say the man, who Sheriff Mike Bouchard identified as 53-year-old Igor Lanis, came out of his house with a shotgun and fired at an Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy. A sheriff's deputy and a Walled Lake police officer both fired back, fatally hitting the suspect.
Authorities then went inside and found his 25-year-old daughter trying to crawl out of the house and found his 56-year-old wife dead with multiple gunshot wounds to her back.
His daughter had also been shot in the back and legs multiple times and was taken to the hospital. She was believed to be in stable condition Sunday afternoon.
Bouchard said investigators believe the victims may have been trying to escape the house, which is why they were shot in the back.
The family dog was also shot twice with a shotgun. Officials believe a handgun may have also been used in the shooting.
Bouchard said a 15-year-old girl also lives at the home, but was not there at the time of the shooting.
A possible motive in the case is not known, as Bouchard said the daughter could barely talk after the shooting. He said it was "terribly sad on so many levels."
Officers from Novi, Wixom and Walled Lake all responded to the scene.
The sheriff's office is still investigating what may have led to the shooting.
