WARREN (WWJ) – A dog who was shot multiple times and found bloodied on the side of the road in Southwest Detroit is fighting for her life and a local animal rescue is asking for donations.
I Heart Dogs Rescue and Animal Haven in Warren posted pictures to Facebook on Wednesday of a shepherd mix that someone had sent to them, pleading for the rescue to help the dog.
“When we received the pictures, we were in complete shock,” the Facebook post said.
The dog had a swollen face, torn up leg and was missing skin and fur when she was found.
Officials initially thought the dog may have been hit by a car, but after taking her in to Animal Emergency Center, X-Rays revealed she had been shot multiple times all over her body, including in the head.
The dog, who the rescue has since named Adira – meaning “strong, noble and powerful,” according to a Thursday Facebook post – has to have one of her eyeballs removed after. The rescue says they believe she was hit by birdshot, which is used for hunting birds, and one of the pellets pierced her eye.
“She fought throughout the night, and is still with us. We had to transfer to a specialist at Blue Pearl, and right now we are really just trying to manage her pain, and get her stronger,” an update on Thursday said.
Once Adira is stable, the rescue says she likely will need CT scans to determine what the next steps are.
The rescue is asking for financial support. Officials said Thursday they could need an additional $5,000-10,000 on top of what had already been fundraised.
Donations can be made directly through the rescue’s Facebook page or on their website, iheartdogs.org
