DETROIT (WWJ) -- President Joe Biden made a stop in Detroit Wednesday afternoon, visiting GM’S Factory ZERO, where he took a new Hummer EV for a test drive.
Ahead of his speech to talk about the recently passed infrastructure bill, Biden jumped behind the wheel of the EV, even peeling out as he punched the gas.
"God, it feels good to be back in Detroit," Biden said during his speech. “And that Hummer’s one hell of a vehicle, man. Yo!”
Biden punched the accelerator and felt the power of the 1000-HP Hummer's "Watts To Freedom" mode, which allows it to go from 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds.
Biden spoke late Wednesday afternoon at GM’s new plant, formerly the Detroit-Hamtramck Plant, the first major building block of the company’s vision to have an all-electric fleet by 2035.
The $1.2 trillion infrastructure plan includes expanding the EV charging network. Michigan is set to receive about $110 million over five years to support that expansion.
Biden called EVs “masterpieces of modern manufacturing, built by union workers and proof that America has what it takes to win the competition of the 21st century.”
Factory ZERO, which took $2 billion and two years to build, is the company's first, but definitely not the last plant that will be exclusively making EVs.
WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert says Factory ZERO is lined with pre-production models of the Hummer EV, which is expected to be shipped to buyers by the end of the year.
