FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) – Police in Farmington Hills are warning residents of what appears to be a scam involving thieves posing as water department workers.
Authorities are asking residents to be on the lookout after two suspects scammed a resident last week.
The incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. on March 28 when two men showed up at a house near 9 Mile and Drake Roads and told the victim they worked for the city’s Water Department.
The suspects said they needed to check the water inside their home. While one of the suspects distracted the homeowners, the other stole items from inside the house, according to Farmington Hills police.
Authorities did not say what was stolen from the home.
Police describe both suspects as white males, approximately 30 years old, and 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10.
One was believed to be wearing a green safety vest and a brown baseball cap.
The suspects were driving a newer model, silver four-door SUV with a white magnetic placard on the driver’s side door. Authorities did not disclose what the placard said or what make the vehicle may be.
Farmington Hills Police Chief Jeff King is reminding residents to refuse entry to anyone who arrives at your home unexpectedly or presents information that may seem suspicious.
“Residents should question any service worker who arrives without being summoned by the resident for a service call,” officials said in a press release. “If you are approached at your residence and you are suspicious of the worker, immediately call 911 and officers will respond to verify the credentials of the person at your door.”
Anyone who has information about the identity of the suspects, had similar contact with the suspects, or has any information to assist in this investigation, is asked to contact the Farmington Hills Police Department Command Desk at 248-871-2610.
