(WWJ) There won't be any fun in the sun at Waterford Oaks Waterpark this summer, due to a lack of lifeguards.
The popular park — known for its tropical wave pool and three-story raft ride — will not open for the 2021 season, according to an announcement by management on Wednesday.
The reason is simple: Officials with Oakland County Parks and Recreation say they were unable to hire enough lifeguards to staff the facility.
“We appreciate the patience of our dedicated staff who have been working since January to recruit and hire staff for all our facilities,” Interim Executive Officer Susan Wells said. “Unfortunately, lifeguard recruiting has been an issue the last few years in the county, state and nation. OCPR will not operate a facility if we are unable to provide the adequate safety level for our guests and staff.”
The disappointing news comes one week after a hiring fair was held at the park. Apparently, not enough people showed up looking for work.
Reaction to the closure was swift and decidedly solemn, with some on social media some blaming stimulus and unemployment payments.
Kim Kotwicki Buca commented: "So sad no one wants to work... Such a great local water park and affordable family fun."
Ray Bentley weighed in: "There are probably more kids sitting at home on video games than there are looking for a job ...this has nothing to do with the pay ...Parents aren't teaching work ethics anymore."
Those looking for spot to splish and splash this summer can still visit Red Oaks Waterpark, also operated by Oakland County Parks and Recreation. Located at 1455 E. Thirteen 13 Mile Rd. in Madison Heights, Red Oaks offers a children’s splash pad, wave-action pool, giant triple waterslide, bathhouse, picnic areas, lockers, free tubes and lounge chairs.
