ZEELAND TWP., Mich. (WWJ) – A West Michigan man is facing several civil infractions after being struck by an Amtrak train when he ignored activated railroad crossing arms because he was apparently looking at his phone Friday night.

The 24-year-old Grand Rapids man’s vehicle was hit by the train in Zeeland Township in the area of 80th Avenue and Chicago Drive around 11:40 p.m. Friday, according to a report from WOOD TV in Grand Rapids.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said the man in the Ford Explorer was looking at his cell phone and crashed through the railroad crossing arms, which were down and activated at the time.

He was then hit by the eastbound train, but was uninjured. No other injuries were reported. It was not clear if any passengers were on the train at the time.

The train sustained minor damage, but was able to continue to Grand Rapids after an inspection.

The SUV sustained excessive damage, the sheriff’s office said.

The man’s name has not been released, but police say he was issued several civil infractions for causing the crash.
