(WWJ) – Memorial Day weekend is here, unofficially kicking off the summer season, and it’s shaping up to be a pretty good weather weekend.
AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson says it looks like the mid-week rain will move out in time for the holiday weekend and we’ll “have a little bit of something for everyone.”
Saturday will be comfortable – temperatures in the mid-70s with low humidity. Sunday will be around 80, while Monday will feel like summer – temps climbing into the upper 80s with more humidity.
“So the unofficial start of summer is gonna feel pretty summer-like,” Thompson said on WWJ’s weekly Weather Wednesday segment.
As temperatures have been warming up over the last month or so, is that a precursor for what lies ahead this summer?
Thompson says while Memorial Day weekend doesn’t necessarily tell us what’s going to happen in the months ahead, it does look like we’ve got some warm weather on-tap this summer.
“Our forecast is for a fairly similar summer to what we had last year, temperature-wise,” Thompson said.
Last summer Metro Detroit saw 13 days above 90 degrees, which he says is right on par for average and we’re expecting about the same this year – maybe even a little bit more.
“At this point, we’re expecting a somewhat hotter than average summer, but maybe not as hot compared to other parts of the country when compared to normal.,” Thompson said.
Thompson says Metro Detroit will likely see a pretty stormy period in the early summer months and there could be more thunderstorms in June and July.
“We talked last week about how we really haven’t had much severe weather yet this spring. Maybe that changes here as we get into June and July, which is probably close to our peak of the severe weather season here locally.”
Thompson says if we do get a stormier and wetter weather pattern, that would bring more humidity, which would mean more uncomfortable days and warmer nights.
