DETROIT (WWJ) – A sweeping cold front is expected to bring strong winds and frigid temperatures to all of Southeast Michigan on Wednesday, as well as the possibility of snow showers.
A wind advisory will be in effect from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and the National Weather Service in Detroit says there will be southwest sustained winds of 20-25 mph and possible gusts of up to 45 mph.
The strongest winds are expected to happen between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Temperatures will begin in the 30s Wednesday morning, but will quickly fall into the teens by the late evening after the passage of the cold front, according to the NWS.
The NWS says snow showers will also expand across Southeast Michigan throughout the day on Wednesday, with minor accumulations possible. Any possible showers would come in the afternoon and evening, with increasing chances north of M-59.
West Michigan is expected to get a heavy dose of snow, with some areas near Grand Rapids bracing for 3-7 inches. Further north along the lakeshore, Ludington could see up to 10 inches.
AccuWeather meteorologist Brian Thompson says metro Detroit might “get grazed by mostly just some flurries,” and perhaps a snow shower or two.
He says areas near I-69 could see a coating to an inch or so of accumulation, with some possibly slippery travel conditions.
While there could be some slick spots in metro Detroit, it will be “hit or miss” and Wednesday’s big story will be the wind.
Thompson says Tuesday night will be blustery with patchy clouds and temperatures in the mid to low 30s before the Wind Advisory kicks in, bringing some chilly January weather to the area.
Temperatures are expected to keep dropping into Thursday and Friday, with high temperatures in the low 20s and low temps around 10 degrees. Things are expected to warm up slightly for the weekend. MORE DETAILS HERE
