Southfield Police said a preliminary investigation found that a pickup truck headed eastbound on 9 Mile was towing a trailer loaded with scrap metal.

At some point the trailer became dislodged, and a piece of debris from the trailer was ejected, going airborne before hitting and shattering the victim's windshield.

The victim, identified as a Detroit resident, suffered serious head trauma when she was struck by the debris, police said.

She was taken by EMS to a hospital where she was listed in critical condition, and later died of her injuries.

It's unclear if the driver of the pickup could face anycharges. Police are still investigating.

The woman's name was not released.
