SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) – Police suspect speed and alcohol were factors in a crash in Shelby Township late Friday night that left a woman dead and three others hospitalized.

First responders were called just before 11 p.m. to the area of Van Dyke and Elizabeth Ann Street – just south of 21 Mile Road – for a crash that involved serious injuries.

When authorities showed up they found a Chevy Tahoe with heavy damage in the northbound lanes of Van Dyke and a heavily damaged Dodge Challenger in the parking lot of a small strip mall.

A 25-year-old woman who had been a passenger in the Tahoe was found lying in the middle of Van Dyke with serious injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene, despite first responders attempting life-saving measures.

The driver of the Tahoe, a 43-year-old woman, had to be removed from the SUV. She was taken to Troy Beaumont Hospital, according to Shelby Township police.

The 26-year-old woman driving the Challenger and her 27-year-old passenger also had to be removed from the car. They were also taken to the same hospital.

Authorities did not release the conditions of any of the surviving victims.

Van Dyke was shut down between 21 Mile and Russell Avenue for several hours during the investigation.

Police officials say speed and alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash, but it was not clear what exactly happened leading up to the crash.

Officials did not release the names or hometowns of anyone involved in the crash.
