Traffic stop in Texas leads to discovery of woman's body in Livingston County

GENOA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WWJ) -- A man is under arrest down south for the murder of a woman in Livingston County.

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office tells WWJ sheriff’s deputies in Wheeler County, Texas -- in the state's panhandle -- conducted a traffic stop of Brandon Wilson on Monday, and during that stop, he made some sort of comments to officers that raised some red flags.

Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy says authorities contacted his office and told them to check on Janey Cairns.

“It’s my understanding that when he was pulled over he made some statements to the deputies that pulled him over,” Murphy told WWJ. “That led them to reach out to us and say ‘hey, something just doesn’t quite add up here, you might want to go check on this woman, here’s the address.’ We arrived over there, did a welfare check and found a woman deceased.”

Authorities have not released many details about the incident, but police found the woman’s body at a condo in Genoa Township, which is located between Howell and Brighton.

No cause of death has been released.

Wilson reportedly lived in the same building as Cairns, according to a report from Fox 2 in Detroit. It was not clear why he was in Texas and authorities did not say what prompted the traffic stop.

While Wilson has been charged with open murder and legal proceedings are underway to extradite him back to Michigan, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have information to come forward and contact Detective Jake Fairbanks at 517-540-7956.

Murphy says he can’t remember the last murder in Livingston County.

“I don’t recall our last homicide, but it’s not something happens very (frequently),” he said. “Our county as a whole is relatively safe and just a good place to raise a family, and these kinds of things don’t happen. “
