COMSTOCK (WWJ) – A young child has died after her mother’s van ran a red light in West Michigan Saturday afternoon.
Michigan State Police officials say the child was ejected from the van when it rolled over on Sprinkle Road in Kalamazoo County’s Comstock Township.
It all unfolded around 2:40 p.m. when a silver Pontiac van was headed eastbound on H Avenue and failed to stop at a red light at the Sprinkle Road intersection.
A gray Chevy Impala headed north on Sprinkle had the right of way, according to MSP. Officials said the Impala tried to stop, but was unable to avoid contact and hit the passenger side of the van.
The collision caused the van to overturn, ejecting the 5-year-old child.
The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her 29-year-old mother, the driver of the van, suffered only minor injuries, MSP said.
A 41-year-old Augusta man driving the Chevy suffered minor injuries as well.
Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to MSP. It was not clear whether seatbelts were used in the crash, officials said.
Authorities are still investigating.
Officials initially believed the crash to be a hit-and-run, but said Saturday night there had been a misunderstanding.
The crash left the road closed in the area for several hours.
