A new poll has found that more than half of Americans would not support former President Donald Trump if he were to receive the GOP nomination.
The Associated Press-NORC poll, released on Wednesday and conducted before Trump’s fourth indictment, highlighted that 53% of Americans said they would 'definitely' not support Trump, while an additional 11% would 'probably' not support him.
But the odds of Trump winning the GOP nominee remain high, as there is still a stark contrast between how Republicans view him and how others do.
The poll found that 63% of Republicans want Trump to run for a second term, and nearly 70% say they hold a favorable view of the former president.
Both numbers are up from where they were in April, 55% and 60%, respectively, showing that while his ongoing legal troubles may be hard for others to swallow, it’s only deepened his support with Republicans — Trump had been indicted three times at the time of this poll being conducted.
When asked if they would support Trump in 2024, being that he is the nominee, nearly 75% answered yes.
The poll swung across the aisle and asked respondents their feelings about President Joe Biden, to which 43% said they would definitely not vote for him in 2024, as well as 11% said they probably would not.
The poll included responses from 1,165 adults and was conducted from Aug. 10-14. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percentage points.
