The LSU football team opened Spring practice this week and Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron said the competition at quarterback is wide open.

He said Max Johnson, who went 2-0 in LSU’s final two games last season, took the first team reps over T.J. Finley, Myles Brennan and freshman quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

“Myles played good enough to win there’s no question about that,” Orgeron said. “TJ against South Carolina had a tremendous game. Garrett is very capable. There’s no favorite here. I thought that Max won the last two games so I’d keep the continuity and let him take the first snaps."

Orgeron said Johnson, Finley, Brennan and Nussmeier all took equal reps.

"Myles and those guys are alternating behind (Johnson),” he said. “But the completion is open and the best man is going to win.

“And I’m going to tell you, during the fourth quarter Myles graded elite like three or four times so he has worked very hard. He’s competitive. Let’s see what happens.”

Orgeron said he was impressed with Brennan who looks like he’s fully recovered from the abdominal injury that ended his 2020 season after three games.

“Myles looks 100 percent to me,” Orgeron said. “I don’t know if he is but he’s doing everything. He’s done everything in the fourth quarters, running around, he’s run some bootlegs... today he looked very good. He threw the ball very well. He’s not complaining about anything.”

Orgeron said he’s looking for a quarterback that shows he’s able to execute the offense under new coordinator Jake Peetz and "be a leader."

“Thats going to happen in scrimmages and that’s going to happen in August this is a ongoing thing,” he said. “I’m watching everything they do. Fourth quarter, class attendance, grades, everything that they do counts and we’re competing.”
