Paul Skenes didn't pitch in LSU's title-clinching victory over Florida, but he did offer an important piggyback ride.
As Gavin Guidry notched the final strikeout of an 18-4 win, LSU charged from its dugout to dogpile on the pitcher's mound. But catcher Alex Milazzo had suffered a significant leg injury scoring a run earlier in the game. He was on crutches.
“He’s special," Johnson said. "He’s all LSU and I was thinking in the 9th inning as like, wait, this is going to happen, someone’s going to have to pick him up and throw him on top of the dogpile with a broken foot.”
That's exactly what Skenes did. Later on Milazzo was spotted getting wheeled around on a cart. Whatever works, right?
Oh, and his head coach wasn't done heaping praise on his catcher, whom he expects to be around the game for a while.
“There’s a good chance he’ll be on our coaching staff someday," Johnson said. "That would not surprise me.”
