LSU football has continued to reload ahead of the 2023 season, brining another Louisiana native back home via the NCAA Transfer Portal.
Defensive back Andre' Sam is transferring to LSU, the program announced Thursday, after one season at Marshall. Sam, a 6th-year senior, had starred at Iowa High School in Louisiana and played his first four seasons at McNeese State.
Sam appeared in 33 games for the Cowboys, logging 120 tackles, 20 passes defensed and 5 interceptions. He appeared in 12 games for the Thundering Herd in 2022, adding 53 tackles, 8 passes defensed and an interception. Sam had initially transferred to Tulane, following former head coach Lance Guidry, who signed on with the Green Wave as their defensive coordinator, but left for Miami shortly thereafter.
The 6-1 safety adds yet another impressive name to the 2023 haul for Brian Kelly in 2023, joining former Notre Dame RB Logan Diggs, former Maryland OT Mason Lunsford, former Oregon State LB Omar Speights, former Texas LB Ovie Oghoufo, former Ohio State CB JK Johnson, former West Virginia DL Jordan Jefferson, former Syracuse CB Duce Chestnut, former Alabama WR Aaron Anderson, former Florida DL Jalen Lee, former Texas A&M CB Denver Harris, former Arizona DL Paris Shand, former Oregon EDGE Bradyn Swinson and former Southern CB Zy Alexander.
Sam will compete in a defensive back room that likely will be led by veterans Sage Ryan and Major Burns, but still has roles up for grabs. The Tigers open their season on Sept. 2 against Florida State in Orlando.
