Tre' Morgan saved LSU's season with a charging play in the College World Series, and he'll hope to do the same someday soon in Tampa Bay.
The Tigers' elite defensive first baseman was selected by the Rays in the third round of the MLB Draft, the No. 88 overall selection. Morgan's value was possibly raised by his 40 starts in the outfield during his junior season, as his hitting skillset doesn't profile for power the way most pro teams would typically seek at the position.
Morgan, a New Orleans native, hit .316 over his final season at LSU, with 15 doubles, four triples, nine home runs, 53 RBIs and 66 runs scored. Morgan also excelled on the big stage in Omaha, with three doubles, a triple and 6 RBIs en route to being named to the All-Tournament team. Morgan also starred in the Super Regionals against Kentucky, hitting two home runs in the first game and going 5-for-9 in the series.
Morgan was the fifth LSU player to go off the board, joining Paul Skenes (Pirates, 1.01); Dylan Crews (Nationals, 1.02); Ty Floyd (Reds, CB1.38); and Grant Taylor (White Sox, 2.51). The first two rounds of the draft were held on Sunday, with Rounds 3-10 taking place throughout the afternoon on Monday. Rounds 11-20 will be held on Tuesday.
The Tigers have another handful of players who could potentially be selected, including Jordan Matthews, Cade Beloso and Gavin Dugas.
