LSU football's new offensive line coach Brad Davis has agreed to his contract, according to reports, just days after he was hired in place of departed James Cregg.
The deal for the Baton Rouge native will cover three years, according to The Advocate's Brooke Kubena, and total just under $2.5 million. The deal will pay out $810,000 in Year 1, and increase by $20,000 each year through 2024.
The deal marks an increase for the Tigers over Cregg's deal, which was set to pay out $700,000 annually through 2022.
Davis, the OL coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks in 2020, was reported as the pick for LSU less than 24 hours after Cregg's departure was announced on Tuesday, June. 2. According to The Advocate's report, unspecific recruiting violations were involved in Cregg's sudden departure.
Davis is a native of Baton Rouge but attended Oklahoma, taking part in a pair of Big 12 title runs (2000 & 2002). The Tigers' new OL coach spent two seasons in the same job for Missouri (2018 & 2019) before spending the 2020 season with the Razorbacks. Davis also spent a season on the Florida Gators coaching staff, with previous stops including North Texas (2016), East Carolina (2015) and James Madison.
A significant element of Davis' decision to join LSU was returning home to Louisiana, according to the initial report.
LSU has largely overhauled its coaching staff around head coach Ed Orgeron after a 2020 season that marked a steep fall from the 2019 title season. The Tigers won their final two games to even the season record at 5-5, but hired a new offensive coordinator in Jake Peetz, and a new defensive coordinator in Daronte Jones looking ahead to the 2021 season.
