Seven letters combine to describe LSU's unacceptable 2021 season: average.
The Tigers are 3-3 halfway into a season that still has the SEC titans remaining on the schedule. Buckle up; this could get very rocky in the back half.
Average could turn to flat-out awful quickly for LSU. But average could also turn into significant improvement and a turned-around season. That’s what we saw a bit of during LSU’s final two games of the 2020 season. I don’t see it happening this time around, but hey, one can hope. But a hope is all it is. Nothing I’ve seen thus far leads me to believe this LSU team can turn things around.
The Tigers will have to navigate the rest of its schedule without the top offensive weapon in Kayshon Boutte. LSU has already dealt with a rash of injuries on the defensive side of the football. This looks like it’ll be getting much worse before it gets better.
Just look at the remaining schedule. No. 20-ranked Florida comes to town this Saturday. Are the Tigers better than the Gators? Clearly not. The following week LSU is on the road against Ole Miss. They cannot beat that team. After Ole Miss and an open week, the Tigers travel to Tuscaloosa to kick off November against the Alabama Crimson Tide. This is going to be an embarrassment for Coach O and his football team. Despite an upset loss to Texas A&M the Tide remain the best team in the country, in my opinion.
After that inevitable — let’s be real — ass whipping against Alabama, things still won’t get much easier. LSU follows up with a home game against No. 17 Arkansas. Being at home in this game should help, but will the crowd have already turned this Tigers group if they come back to town 3-6? The Tigers are NOT better than the Hogs. After Arkansas, LSU will host UL-Monroe. That’s certainly a game LSU should expect to win. But what happens with a loss? It is all but over for Coach O.
Let’s chalk up a win there for now, which would put the Tigers at 4-7. Yep, I think that is where we are headed. Oh, and there’s still a game left after that, with the Tigers closing out the season at home against that same A&M squad that just upset Alabama with a backup quarterback.
Let’s answer this one together: Are the Tigers better than A&M? NOPE!
So there you have it. In my eyes, this LSU squad finishes the season 4-8 — twice as many losses as wins. If that is the result massive changes are coming for the football program just 2 years removed from being the best in the land.
Sad! Truly just a sad situation for a program that had so much momentum before it was driven right into the ground.
Let me be clear: I like Coach O. I don’t want him to be fired. I don’t ever want to see anyone fired. That kind of stuff crushes families. With that said, Coach O is a grown man. He knew what he was getting into. It’s the cost of doing business as a college football coach. Call me names; tell me I am too negative. That’s ok.
I just do not see LSU pulling out of this tailspin any time soon.
