The Sean Payton trade saga is over, all that's left is to question the return.
And that's the subject Jeff Nowak and Steve Geller debate on the latest episode of Inside Black & Gold.
The trade details:
- Broncos send: 2023 1st-round pick (No. 29); 2024 second-round pick
- Saints send: Sean Payton; 2024 3rd-round pick

Steve's take: "I like the deal, obviously, because it gets the situation handled this year. We don't have to carry it over to next season. I think what the Saints are getting in return for Sean Payton is fine, I just don't like what they're also sending back. I don't like the inclusion of the third-rounder. Maybe that's me being a bit greedy, I guess, but I thought a first and a second was fair compensation. But it's tough when there's not much of a market out there dictating the compensation."
Jeff's take: "[The Broncos] ended up in a situation where, in order to save face, they had to just give in and make a trade that they probably didn't want to make. They didn't want to give up their first-round pick, but they knew that that was the only option, so they did it. And if you're the Saints, now you have a first-round pick, and there was this idea that Mickey Loomis wanted two first round picks, but I think that's just a negotiating tactic is you come in higher so you can settle for lower. And at the end of the day getting a first-round pick for a coach that is not going to coach your team is a win, and so that's where you set the bar in my opinion is 'OK, are we getting a first?' Yes. So how much can you get past that.
...
"I think if you're the Saints, you're aware the Broncos are kind of tilting right now. If you give them enough time to talk themselves out of it, this is probably a team and a franchise that's going to do that based on what we have seen and how quickly they seem to change their mind. So for the Saints I think there's incentive there to say 'OK, this is the best we're going to get. Let's move on.' "
The other thing to keep in mind: There's no way to know what the coaching market would look like next year. The Saints made sure to get their value this year, and it's hard to complain about that. The biggest question now: What can they do with pick No. 29? That will ultimately determine whether the trade was good value.
