Hebert: With Jarvis Landry, Saints a 'top-3' NFC team, 'no excuses' for Jameis Winston

A common thread on SportsTalk the last few months from Bobby Hebert: Man, it sure would be great if the Saints could sign Tyrann Mathieu OR Jarvis Landry.

As of this week, they've landed both. And the Cajun Cannon doesn't mince words on what he thinks it means for this year's Saints squad, now loaded up with offensive weapons to complement a dominant defense in the first year of Dennis Allen's tenure.

"The Saints are in the hunt," Hebert said Friday on SportsTalk with Kristian Garic. "I don’t know if the rest of the nation, if they’re going to finally get on the bandwagon. But I’m telling you, we’re in the top three right now in the NFC. We don’t have to worry about the AFC."

"We just have to get in the postseason and take care of business," Hebert continued. "I’ll tell you, I’d be extremely disappointed if we wouldn’t be a double-digit winning team or for-sure in the playoffs."

After a season that saw the Saints trying to make things work with Marquez Callaway, Tre'Quan Smith and Donte Harty as the top-three receiving options, that picture has changed significantly. Michael Thomas is expected to return after missing the entire 2021 season. Former Ohio State standout Chris Olave was drafted No. 11 overall, and Landry is now in the fold.

With Winston coming back off a knee injury, there are going to be some questions. But there's no question in terms of the cast around him. He's in a situation where he's got the pieces to succeed, and it's now the year he can put his stamp on his position as the long-term answer at quarterback.

"There’s no excuse now for Jameis Winston not to have a great season," Hebert said. "Because I think if Jameis Winston plays great, I can see for-sure 10 wins if not 11 or 12 wins. Now, if he would struggle, I would say we still would have a winning season, like at 9-8. And then the worst-case scenario, but they’d probably make a change, we’d only have 8 wins. But I think this is a home run."
