How much of an impact can a conversation have on the NFL's disciplinary process? We're about to find out.

Alvin Kamara shipped out in Gayle Benson's private jet on Wednesday for a meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to share his side of the story on a Las Vegas assault incident that was wrapped up in criminal court last month. The meeting went "very well," according to a report from NOLA.com's Jeff Duncan, and he was back in New Orleans with the team by the end of the day.

Kamara initially faced a felony charge stemming from the incident ahead of the 2021 Pro Bowl, but ultimately pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor with monetary penalties and mandated community service.

"I think it shows initiative on Alvin's part to want to get out ahead of this and get his side of the story out in terms of visiting with the commissioner," head coach Dennis Allen said. "So we'll see how it goes."

Kamara is expected back at practice Friday. The next step is to wait and see what happens. The NFL's suspension methodology does not require a criminal conviction in order to levy discipline, and a suspension of as many as six games has been considered likely.

Neither Allen nor GM Mickey Loomis has tipped their hand as to their expectations, but the team has added pieces in Jamaal Williams and third-round pick Kendre Miller to, in part, be available if Kamara is forced to miss time.

The Saints have gone through seven camp practices and will get a day off Thursday before a return on Friday for another practice open to fans.
