The Saints stood pat at No. 29, and they landed a big-bodied player at a position of need.
That player is Clemson DT Bryan Bresee, who went one pick after Clemson teammate Myles Murphy, another popular target for the New Orleans Saints. Bresee was a bit of a polarizing figure due to his injury history, but he's undeniably talented, coming out as the No. 1 prospect in 2020.
In three years at Clemson he appeared in 25 games, logging 51 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and 9 sacks.
Bresee also fills a clear need for the Saints, who saw DTs David Onyemata and Shy Tuttle depart to the Falcons and Panthers, respectively.
The Saints went into the day holding eight draft picks (29, 40, 71, 115, 146, 165, 227 and 257). Saints GM Mickey Loomis said the team had conversations with multiple teams to potentially move around, but ultimately stood pat throughout a trade-happy first round.
Playmakers were added around the division, with the Panthers nabbing Bryce Young at No. 1 overall, the Falcons surprising with RB Bijan Robinson at No. 8, and the Bucs bringing in DT Calijah Kancey at 19. The Lions made a splash with the pick of Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs at No. 12, and Will Levis kept dropping and dropping, not going before the Saints made their pick.
The second and third round of the draft will take place on Friday, with the final four rounds on Saturday. Keep up with all the action on WWL.
