Saints first-round pick Bryan Bresee is still early on in his acclimation to the NFL, but there's one part of his game that he knows will translate: Speed.
At over 300 pounds, he's not the guy you'd typically look at for that type of game at the DT spot. You'd be wrong.
"I’m a bigger D-tackle, taller. ... So I think a lot of people probably don’t expect me to be as quick as I am," Bresee said this week. "So, yea, I think people might not expect that to come from me."
But one area Bresee is making sure to take his time on is his development at the NFL level, where he knows technique is key. He said he's spending a lot of time working on footwork, hand placement, a lot of the things that he didn't necessarily need to perfect to succeed at the collegiate level, where he could often rely on sheer power and instinct to overwhelm opponents.
That won't be the case at the NFL level, and he knows it.
"Every little step matters on the D-line, everything happens so quick, so just trying to really understand it," Bresee said. "Once you kind of understand where everybody is coming from, what’s going on, that can kind of really help slow the game down and give you a better understanding of what to expect, and that’s been a big part of what I’ve been trying to focus in on in this camp.”
One big question for Bresee coming into the league, and part of why he slipped to the late first round where he was drafted by the Saints, was his sketchy health record. Bresee missed a good portion of his career at Clemson with an ACL tear and a bizarre kidney issue, but he's healthy now, and looking to make an impact on a "tight-knit" group that is largely coming together in one offseason.
“I feel healthy, really healthy right now and it’s been a while since I’ve felt really healthy, so it feels great," Bresee said. "I feel fast, just feel good.”
