Legendary Saints play-by-play man Jim Henderson's retirement had brought him out on the edge of the Adirondack mountains, but that didn't stop him from finding his way back to the broadcast to congratulate the new 'voice of the Saints.'

Henderson joined SportsTalk with Kristian Garic and Bobby Hebert on to share words with Mike Hoss, announced in his new role with WWL Radio and Audacy on Wednesday afternoon.

“I think I was at WWL for about 35 years and we had some great people come through there doing that time … no one am I am I prouder of than Mike Hoss," Henderson said. "He’s just been a rock during all this time and I’m so happy that he’s gotten this opportunity. He’s going to be great.”

Henderson began as the Saints play-by-play announcer in 1986, teaming with former Saints quarterback Archie Manning. He later called games with former Saints running back Hokie Gajan, and then current color commentator Deuce McAllister before retiring in 2017. Hoss also spent roughly the same span as a broadcaster, beginning with sports coverage before a shift to news with WWL-TV.

“I think back to when I got to New Orleans but I was just a young, stupid kid then," Hoss said Wednesday. "I was just so blown away and I remember watching you prepare for the game and it was just meticulous.”

Hoss said his retirement thus far has been spent with quite a bit of fishing, and his current remote location is due to his traveling up to the family's camp for a 4th of July celebration -- while also thinking back to some of the memorable Saints experiences along the way.

That, of course, includes the Saints' Super Bowl title in the 2009 season. And should the Saints return during Hoss's tenure, Henderson hopes it also means the return of a certain Mardi Gras costume tradition.

“You will [be great] because you’re already a part of this city," Henderson said. "I just expect you to do every game in the moose costume.”
