It was a good year to be a Saints tryout player.
With several roster spots open ahead of OTAs later this month, the Saints have agreed to deals with a trio of players that were on hand for tryouts at rookie minicamp. That group includes defensive back Adrian Frye and running back Ellis Merriweather, both of whom's signings were announced by the team Monday afternoon.
Frye played in 51 games over five seasons at Texas Tech, with 24 starts at either cornerback, nickel or safety. he finished his career with 101 tackles, 19 passes defensed and a forced fumble.
Merriweather appears in 26 games over three seasons with UMass, carrying the ball 410 times for 1,828 yards and 5 TDs. e also caught 31 passes for 217 yards and a TD.
The Saints cut defensive back Vincent Gray and UDFA wide receiver Sy Barnett in corresponding moves.
The Saints have also signed veteran WR James Washington, who played his first four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being selected in the 2nd round of the 2018 draft. He signed with the Cowboys in 2022 but dealt with injuries and did not catch a pass.
The team has also agreed to a deal with another tryout player in DT Jack Heflin, according to a report from Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. Heflin has spent time with the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers, but most recently the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL.
The Saints will be back in action later in May for the first of three sets of voluntary OTAs, followed by a mandatory minicamp in June and then the full training camp in late July.
