Derek Carr will have a familiar face to throw to in New Orleans after all.
The Saints have agreed to terms with free agent WR Bryan Edwards. The terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. The news was first reported by Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
The signing marks the latest in a busy offseason for the Saints split between both sides of the ball. The biggest splash came in the form of Carr himself, and the Saints have also added RB Jamaal Williams who led the NFL with 17 rushing TDs in 2022.
Edwards played his first two NFL seasons with Carr in Las Vegas, though he was never able to generate significant production. His best season was in 2021 when he appeared in 16 games, catching 34 passes for 571 yards and 3 TDs. He was traded to the Atlanta Falcons prior to the 2022 season season, where he appeared in seven games, catching just 3 passes for 15 yards, before being cut and latching on with the Chiefs practice squad.
Edwards, a third round pick out of South Carolina in 2020, offers a skillset that the Saints lacked for a majority of last-season, and which head coach Dennis Allen pointed to specifically as an issue. With Michael Thomas missing 14 games, they simply didn't have a big-bodied receiver who could make contested catches. Thomas is back on a 1-year deal, but the 6-3, 215 pound Edwards could serve as backup in that role if needed.
His arrival also gives Carr a WR he knows as he works to familiarize himself in New Orleans. It appeared the Saints were close to doing that with former Raiders TE and New Orleans native Foster Moreau, but he was diagnosed with cancer after a physical with the Saints medical staff and he'll be stepping away from football as he battles that disease. The Saints have also brought in former Raiders safety Johnathan Abram.
