Saints tight end Adam Trautman was carted off the field on Monday night, but it appears the team has gotten a rare bit of good news.
The second-year tight end underwent an MRI Tuesday morning and it appears he has avoided a major injury, according to a report from Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.football.
The nature of the 24-year-old's injury remains unclear, but he is expected to see a specialist to establish a timeline for a return to the field.
Trautman has been held without a catch through the first two games of the preseason, a suboptimal way to begin a season with high expectations after the departure of Jared Cook and longtime blocking TE Josh Hill over the offseason. Trautman impressed in his rookie season out of Dayton and especially as a blocker, despite logging just 15 catches for 171 yards and a touchdown.
Trautman was just one of the Saints tight ends hurt Monday evening, with veteran Nick Vannett also suffering a reported knee injury and undergoing an MRI. Tight end Garrett Griffin was inactive on Monday due to an injury suffered in practice. He was absent at the team's practice on Tuesday, with the team off on Wednesday.
Should Trautman miss time with injury, the Saints will likely rely on veteran Nick Vannett and second-year converted wide receiver Juwan Johnson. Both players caught passes in the win over Jacksonville.
