He won't be available to help the Saints over the final two games of the regular season, but Jameis Winston is looking a bit more like his on-field self these days.
The injured quarterback's rehab work has been being documented in social media videos, not unlike current Saints linebacker Kwon Alexander. The latest for Winston shows him on his feet and slinging footballs during a recent session.
Check out the video below.
They were by no means full throws by the strong-armed quarterback, but Winston was moving well on his surgically repaired left knee as he progresses back to playing shape. The 27-year-old suffered his season-ending injury during the first half of a Week 8 win against the Tampa Bay Bucs. Winston's leg was caught akwardly beneath him during a tackle by linebacker Devin White, which ultimately drew a flag as an illegal horesecollar tackle and also a hefty fine for the league.
Winston suffered a torn ACL and injuries to his MCL on the play, ending his season after helping lead the Saints to a 5-2 record in his debut as a starter. The results have been mixed to bad since, with a slew of injuries and other issues kicking off the Saints on a 5-game losing streak, the first four games of which were started by Trevor Siemian. Taysom Hill started the next three, with wins over the final two games (Jets and Bucs) before last week's COVID debacle. Rookie Ian Book started against the Dolphins.
The Saints will likely continue with Hill over the final two games, then will either enter the playoffs or the offseason. Whatever week the official offseason starts, the Saints will have another QB decision to make. Winston won the offseason position battle to be the starting QB after signing a one-year deal to stay in New Orleans. But he won't be the quarterback on the field to decide how long that one year lasts and a new contract has to be addressed.
For at least two games it'll be Hill, health willing.
