Saints make flurry of moves after preseason opener; Will Clapp to season-ending IR

The New Orleans Saints have lost another depth offensive lineman for the year, this time in the form of backup center and Metairie native Will Clapp.

The Saints placed Clapp on injured reserve Tuesday with a significant foot injury. Players placed on IR in preseason are not eligible to return, as was also the case with guard Nick Saldiveri last week.

Both WR Chris Tyree and TE Mason Pline were waived with injury designations. Tyree was injured in the week leading up to the game, while Pline was helped off the field in the second half against the Chargers with what appeared to be an upper-body issue.

The good news for the Saints comes with RG Trevor Penning, who also left with a foot injury but is expected to be week-to-week, according to a report from the NFL Network. It's the second time in Penning's young career that he's suffered a foot injury during a preseason game against the Chargers.

The team was quick to fill those roster spots with the signings of WR Roderick Daniels and DT Jayden Peevy, while also bringing back TE Seth Green, who was waived last week. Daniels and Peevy were among 12 players worked out by the Saints, which included a trio of center options in Cody Whitehair, Scott Quessenberry and Nick Harris. For now it appears they are set to roll with UDFA Torricelli Simpkins III to back up Erik McCoy. Simpkins, who only began taking snaps at center midway through camp, took over for Clapp at center on the third snap of the game and never came out.

The Saints could also potentially turn to second-year pro Kyle Hergel or veteran Shane Lemieux, who started at center for the Saints in 2024, if they opt to stick with the roster as currently constructed.

The Saints will be in California for three more practices before heading back to Louisiana for a game with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the remainder of their preseason slate.
