Mother Nature certainly hasn't been able to make up her mind these days and that makes planning for Mardi Gras all the more difficult. However, it does take a bit more than rain to cancel a parade.
“It depends on so many things. We used to have a rain out schedule.”
Mardi Gras Guide’s Arthur Hardy says though parading in the rain isn’t ideal, it is doable. And for good reason. It can be more than a Krewe could bear should cancellation come into the conversation.
“If a parade gets cancelled due to weather, all bets are off on whether or if and when they could reschedule.”
So, if you are wondering, that is why krewes are slow to cancel or even delay a parade, because it could mean the end of their season without ever having started.
More than rain, “it’s high winds that’s the culprit. We have had cancellations due to high winds in the last five years are so. The floats are pretty big and it would take a lot to blow them over. Though, it has happened back in 1970, resulting in the death of one rider.”
For those trying to plan for this weekend’s parades, it’s best to stay weather aware and act accordingly. However, for the Mardi Gras Guide himself…
“I’ll be out there no matter what!”
Take that weather elves….
