Despite the prime suspect confessing to TV reporters, the FBI is continuing to collect evidence in the deaths of a Loranger woman and her young daughter. So why are the feds seeking information through a tip line and a website when Daniel Callihan says he did it?
An agent in the New Orleans bureau says that because they want video evidence that can help them shore up their case against Daniel Callihan.
"It really is a matter of making sure that we retrieve all of the information that's out there including video that may be deleted given a certain amount of time whether it belongs to a business or elsewhere," FBI New Orleans Special Agent in Charge Lyonel Myrthil said. "We're making sure that we have everything that is out there that can possibly help us paint a big picture of what happened, what took place, and the timeline of events. We may have gaps that we may not be aware of that the videos may show us."
Myrthil says investigators are looking for any video that can give them a better idea of Callihan's movements between Tuesday and Thursday. He says since the tip line and website opened over the weekend, agents have received a number of videos and other clues that will help piece together Daniel Callihan's movements before and after the murders.
"Every bit of information helps," Myrthil said. "It is a whole community effort to make sure we bring this family justice."
Myrthil says the tips the FBI receives through the hotline and website will help them shore up their case against Callihan before that case goes to court. For Myrthil, the mission of the tip line and website is simple.
"Being able to hold people accountable," Myrthil said.
When asked, Myrthil confirmed that federal prosecutors will try their case against Callihan before the states of Louisiana and Mississippi prosecute him.
